Product Description Increasingly today we seem to face more and more verbal aggression. At work, on the streets, even at home... but how do you deal with it? A common reaction is to shout back, but that will probably just cause the situation to escalate into further abuse. In this book, trainer Robert Agar-Hutton teaches the basic techniques of how to deal with someone who is verbally aggressive, and to bring the situation under control. Suitable for people aged 14 and up.

| Customer Reviews: A concise and realistic tool June 8, 2007 Julie T. Perry (PA, United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
(USA Reader of the "English English" version) How to Deal With Verbal Aggression is, as advertised, a basic starter to give understanding of how to deal with the verbal aggression we do face in our daily and/or professional lives. It begins by first helping to identify the causes of verbal aggression, then moves on to explain how to diffuse the different types. The key to the solution for any problem lies in understanding the nature of the problem - and this book delivers.
The reader can get as much or as little out of this book as they put into it. A skim through will give you the basic concepts, taking the time to complete the offered exercises will offer a much deeper level of understanding. I am a martial art teacher, foster parent, mother, consumer, and presenter among other things. I have found the information available in this book easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to put into action as long as I remain willing to follow the suggestions for my behavior modification. I am also finding the more I put Mr. Agar-Hutton's principles into practice, the fewer "idiots" I seem to be running into.
How to Deal with Verbal Aggression is a refreshing change from the years of cumbersome and unrealistic training materials I have been subjected to. I find it a concise and realistic tool that will come off my shelf again and again to refresh what I know, as well as be recommended to others (but they can't take my copy out of the house!).
Dealing with Verbal aggression ... more than that June 9, 2007 Bruce E. Miller (Minnesota USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The book is exactly as advertised, a basic starter in understanding of how to deal with the verbal aggression. It begins by first helping to identify the causes of verbal aggression, then moves on to explain how to diffuse the different types.
I find the information available in this book easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to put into action.
Many of the examples are based on the British point of view of the writer but the principles are definitely valid and if one looks past that nit picking detail and tries to implement these concepts you will find that they work.
I am a martial art teacher and a medical professional in the psychiatric field and thus have to deal with violence on a very frequent basis. The principles of this book are a tool I use to help de- escalate situations I run into. For that alone I could easily recommend this book
However I think that unfortunately most people only see ways to try to work on anger control but in fact if you examine the concepts in this book, it actually gives you the principles to take charge of your life through challenging your ability to look at all things differently and realize YOU can make changes that put you in control.
Don't be fooled buy its small size... there is far more here than initially meets the eye.
I definitely recommend it ... but I suggest that after you have read it once ... put it down for a couple of weeks and pick it back up and read it again ...
Dealing with Verbal Aggression June 10, 2007 L. Sclafani (New Jersey, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
"Forewarned is forearmed." This book points out a number of subtle aspects I never considered or were never really consciously aware of in the whole process.
My normal response would have been to fight fire with fire, but then again I can take care of myself physically, having trained in karate for the past 36 years. But my wife and 2 teenaged daughters are not so skilled therefore being able to recognize the early symptoms and respond proactively are what I thought were two of the major assets of this book.
"I've given all three of them the book to read having reread it myself a couple of times.
"It's an easy read, and the principles can be extrapolated even into everyday not so aggressive encounters as one would meet in business, or even being hit by a sales pitch.
"Definitely, a recommended read"
A waste of money April 17, 2007 Daniel Kossmann 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
The book is thin and the content even thinner. It is from the UK and the authors suggested techniques may work there but I am from the US and I thought they were lame.
